چکیده

In biliary atresia, one-fourth of the patients showed prolonged jaundice in spite of a good excretion of bile after surgery. To investigate the cause of jaundice, factors related to the serum bilirubin level were examined in 28 recent cases. Furthermore, clinical analysis was performed in 86 cases of good excretion of bile after surgery. The following results were obtained: The daily amount of bilirubin excretion in bile and bilirubin concentration play an important role in decreasing the serum bilirubin level. The most important factor for prolonged jaundice is ascending cholangitis. Shortening of the life span of the red blood cells is one of the causes of prolonged jaundice.

Hepatic expression of multidrug resistance protein 2 in biliary atresia

BACKGROUND Biliary atresia (BA) is an idiopathic inflammatory obliterative cholangiopathy of neonates, leading to progressive biliary cirrhosis. Hepatoportoenterostomy (Kasai procedure) can cure jaundice in 30% to 80% of patients. Postoperative clearance of jaundice is one of the most important factors influencing long-term outcomes of BA patients. Multidrug resistance protein 2 (MRP2) is one o...

Peri-Operative High-Dose v Post-Operative Low Dose Steroid Therapy in the Management of Biliary Atresia: a Preliminary Report

Background: The use of high-dose steroid therapy peri portoenterostomy may have a positive impact on the frequency of cholangitis and survival rate. Methods: A prospective study was conducted on two groups of patients (less than three months of age) suffering from biliary atresia from 1999 to 2005. The patients in group I (G I) were managed peri-operatively by high-dose methylprednisolone while...

Increased conjugated bilirubin is sufficient to initiate screening for biliary atresia.

INTRODUCTION Biliary atresia is the leading cause of liver transplantation in children. It affects 1:15,000 in Denmark. With a national birth rate of 60,000, four children are born every year with biliary atresia. Early correction of biliary obstruction is essential to prevent fatal biliary cirrhosis. The Danish Health and Medicines Authority (DHMA) demands diagnostic evaluation of children wit...

Liver transplantation for biliary atresia.

Biliary atresia is the most common indication for liver transplantation (OLT) in children. We present our experience with OLT as a treatment for end-stage liver disease in children with biliary atresia. We performed a retrospective review of 20 biliary atresia patients (11 male, 9 female patients; mean age, 21.4 months; range, 6 to 84 months) who had undergone OLT. Mean preoperative weight and ...

Newborn Screening for Biliary Atresia.

Biliary atresia is the most common cause of pediatric end-stage liver disease and the leading indication for pediatric liver transplantation. Affected infants exhibit evidence of biliary obstruction within the first few weeks after birth. Early diagnosis and successful surgical drainage of bile are associated with greater survival with the child's native liver. Unfortunately, because noncholest...
